The Grand Prismatic Spring is a massive hot spring, the biggest in Yellowstone National Park and the third largest globally. It’s more than 300 feet long, 200 feet wide, and 100 feet deep. The spring gets its name from the colorful edges that look like a prism, with rings of blue, green, yellow, orange, and red colors.
Yellowstone has five geothermal features: hot springs, geysers, fumaroles, mud pots, and travertine terraces. They’re all connected because they involve water getting heated underground and rising to the surface. It was officially named by the Hayden Expedition in 1871, the first time people explored Yellowstone with government funding. More: Glendalough: Spiritual retreats for prayer and meditation

It holds significant geological and touristic importance within the Yellowstone National Park. Positioned in the Upper Geyser Basin, approximately 7.5 miles to the north of the renowned Old Faithful geyser, this natural wonder is discernible on cartographic representations as the Midway Geyser Basin. For the convenience of visitors traversing the park by automobile, a convenient parking facility is available, located just a brief walk from the Grand Prismatic Spring. Why is Grand Prismatic Spring so famous?
Only two hot springs in the world are larger than the Grand Prismatic Spring: Frying Pan Lake in New Zealand and Boiling Lake in Dominica. When you explore Yellowstone, it’s common to stroll on boardwalks and peer into deep blue hot springs. There are quite a few beautiful springs to see.
The Grand Prismatic is a bit different because you can’t walk up close to look down into it. Instead, it feels like you’re gazing over a steaming pond or mountain lake. In the early days, people even called it Prismatic Lake or Emerald Lake. Some people might not find it super impressive because it’s hard to take in all at once. That’s why it’s essential to view it both up close and from above.
It’s named Prismatic because it showcases the colors of a light prism. These colors come from millions of tiny organisms known as thermophiles (“thermo” means heat, and “phile” means lover). These organisms can only survive in hot temperatures, but there’s a limit to how hot it can get for them. The temperature dictates which organisms survive, influencing the colors we see. The center of the hot spring is deep blue because it’s too hot for any organisms. As the water flows towards the edges and exits the hot spring, it cools, changing colors from green to yellow, orange, red, and finally brown.
From a higher viewpoint, it looks like a big eye. It isn’t the only impressive natural formation; there are three smaller ones nearby – the Turquoise Pool, the Opal Pool, and the Excelsior Geyser Crater. You can easily walk to them from the Grand Prismatic Spring Parking Lot, enjoying the various colors and light effects from the ground vapors along the way.
